![]() ![]() ![]() In real life, a character traveling into the distant future would literally have to learn a completely new language: even if people are still using spoken language rather than, say, Electronic Telepathy and even if they are speaking what they call "English", there's a fairly high probability that it won't be similar enough to the character's English to allow intelligibility. It means that a thousand years' difference (for example, between Old English and modern English) can make two versions of the same language completely unintelligible another thousand (as with the 2,000 years dividing Latin and modern French) and you might not even realize they're related. This is the basic idea behind an entire discipline of linguistics. Geoffrey Chaucer, 600 or so years ago Translation "You know that it is in the nature of language to change within a thousand years, and words which then held high regard, now seem to us absurd and unfamiliar, but thus they spoke."Īll languages are always changing, all the time, so long as someone is alive to speak them. ![]()
